Why, Narendra Modi, Why?

Maya Kodnani and Narendra Modi (via countercurrents.org)
We trusted you all these years and now you betray us. Why you no save Maya Kodnani and Babu Bajrangi? Why you want death penalty for these brave warriors?

We have heard many stories of royal intrigues, conspiracies, and Machiavellian designs from the past, but this is the most shocking tale of betrayal in the recent history. Just because we called you Hindu Hridaya Samrat, you have started acting like those samrats or kings from the past, who used to kill their own brothers and fathers to acquire thrones? You have dealt a severe blow to all the Hindus.

Dr. Maya Kodnani, a gynecologist, an MLA at that time, a modern-day Jhansi-ki-Rani, was a dauntless leader, who led of an army that massacredcut, shot, burned97 Muslims, including 36 children and 35 women at Naroda Patiya and Naroda Gaon, on February 28, 2002. Of course, it was in response to the burning of Hindus in a train in Godhra. She and the other warriors, in a way, helped the Government and the law-enforcers by meting out instant justice by burning unrelated Muslims, as it would have been difficult for your Government to find and punish the real culprits.

And she thrived after this heroic act because you were there for her. At first, no one dared to name her in an FIR. She was named only at the intervention of the then Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, but her name was removed thereafter. You transferred the investigating police officers and judges to save her and the other heroes of the 2002 battle of Gujarat, and made her Minister for Women and Child Development in 2007.

Unfortunately, in 2009, the Supreme Court ordered transfer of the investigation of ten cases including the Naroda Patiya incident from Gujarat Police to Special Investigation Team (SIT), and Mayaben, along with others, was convicted and sentenced 28 years in jail on 31 August, 2012.

It was her conviction, of a minister in your cabinet, which polished your image and prompted Britain to end 10-year diplomatic boycott. Despite so many sacrifices, instead of granting her respite, you want death penalty for her? Why, Narendra Modi, why?

And what can I say about the trust that Babu Bajrangi, the modern-day Maharana Pratap, had placed in you? Please, listen to him describe his exploits and utter your name at 6:30 in this video recorded by Tehelka. My eyes swell up with tears whenever I watch it. He is such an adorable, roly-poly, innocent guy, whom you want dead:

Why, Narendra Modi, why? Why did you betray the Hindus? Even though the sickularists kept harping about the 2002 massacre and called you maut ka saudagar, we were ready to welcome you with open hearts. We didn't mind you being communal. We were looking forward to the Gujarat model of development for our whole nation. We were ready to embrace such a model, even if it stood on the corpse of humanity. Now, why do you want to project yourself as a sickularist? Why, Narendra Modi, why?

  2. It is the saddest event in the history of Republic of India. Have seen this video over and over in the last 2 years- and it still evokes the same response.

    1. There are a few others beside this, disclosing the planning and cover up of the riots, but this is the most horrible one :(

  3. Ma'am, the voice in the above video is not in sync with the pictures. However, what is heartening is that the wheels of justice are moving, and slowly the guilty are being punished. This is rare in India (the land of injustice), where countless riots have happened and the guilty have gone unpunished. Also, no riots have happened in Guj since 2002, which is a sort of achievement in our riot-prone country (one only needs to look at the state of affairs in UP, Assam, Mah, AP etc). I would shake off the trap of 'availability heuristics', and refrain from singling out the Guj riots as the 'only bad' thing that happened in our generation. I personally believe that Emergency 76 was the worst thing that happened in free India, and it would be irrational to deny that, just because I wasn't born then!
We need massive expansion in the supply of public goods (by reducing corruption) plus education and economic development for all, so that people have a stake in social stability and progress. In fact, I believe that economic growth can be a more effective driver of national unity than Cricket or Bollywood etc.

    1. Yes, the audio and video are not aligned...I will try to fix that.
What you have said is all true, we need to criticize all the bad things. That is all common citizens can do besides not engaging in such horrific activities themselves.
Thank you for this well-thought analysis!

    1. Of course, all people in their right frame of mind will welcome this verdict for Maya Kodnani and Babu Bajrangi, so it should certainly be "Why, Modi why not?"
But this article is written from the point of view of those who are opposing the punishment and want less punishment or freedom for the convicts of Naroda Patiya case: VHP up in arms against Modi govt, opposes move to seek death penalty for Kodnani

    1. Yes, most of the politicians are criminal and all we can do is condemn them. This is the least we can do.
